Glial fibrillary acidic protein is anintermediate filament(IF) protein that is expressed by numerous cell types of thecentral nervous system(CNS) includingastrocytesandependymal cells.GFAP has also been found to be expressed inglomeruliand peritubular fibroblasts taken from rat kidneysLeydig cellsof the testis in both hamstersand humans,humankeratinocytes,humanosteocytesandchondrocytesand stellate cells of thepancreasandliverin rats.It is closely related to its non-epithelial family members,vimentin,desmin, andperipherin, which are all involved in the structure and function of the cell’scytoskeleton.
